Annnnnnnd just like that, we have a ONE year old!
I’m going to do the oh-so-typical mom thing and say I CANNOT BELIEVE IT HAS BEEN A YEAR. Where on earth did this sleepy newborn go???
LOL just kidding. She didn’t sleep then and she doesn’t sleep now. But she has other redeeming qualities which is why we’ve let her stick around for so long.
Anywayssss, she’s one! Which means birthday! Which means PARTY. We made plans to head out of town for vacation (more on that later) on Zoey’s actual birthday, so we opted to party the weekend before. We decided upon a veryyyyyy loosely structured “party animal” theme, and went with these adorable monkey invites and my very favorite party animal tee for Zo’s birthday outfit.
We invited all of our closest family and friends to help us celebrate a full year of this little monster. And can I just say…ain’t no party like a one year old’s party that takes place at 11am on a Saturday. Am I right?!
With the exception of 30+ guests, we kept it pretty low-key with finger foods and a few Target dollar spot decorations. While Zoey was a BIG fan of all the attention, she wasn’t 100% sold on the open flame of her candle.
Zo’s party was also the milestone of her very first taste of sugar (GASP) and let me just say…she took to it like a duck to water. This photo sequence of “baby meets cupcake” features some of my very favorites ever taken of her. This kid cracks me up.
After cupcakes, we took advantage of the sugar high and opened presents. For a little girl who needed nothing at all, she made out like a total bandit. But this fun rocking sheep from her Aunt Morgan and Uncle Jordan stole the show as a party favorite.
While there were definitely more adults present than babies, it was so much fun to have so many teeny tiny guests that were still in utero this time last year!
I’m definitely not the grandest party planner or chef (I’m looking at you, Costco brand bag of frozen meatballs), but we knew we wanted something sweet for our guests to take home as a small thank you for celebrating with us. I also knew we didn’t want to wind up loading people down with silly trinkets or toys, so when Allison at Pretty Sweet Custom Cookies reached out to me about designing custom cookies, I knew they would be the perfect party favor!
Allison was sweet enough to design the cookies to match Zoey’s invitation, and y’all…I could not believe the insane time and detail that went in to crafting just ONE cookie. (And if you’re not already impressed, check out this video of Allison decorating, it blows my mind!)
Like I mentioned before, I refused to spend an arm and a leg decorating, which is why I loved these cookies. They not only served as a dessert, they were so pretty that they wound up being a piece of decor too.
I’ll confess, I wasn’t sure that cookies would be enough for the party, which is why I went through the effort of making cupcakes too. But let me just say – the cookies farrrrrrrr outranked cupcakes in popularity. I mean, I would have been offended if I wasn’t so busy stuffing my face with cookies.
And I’m not just talking about with kids! I saw more than one grown man stuffing cookies in to his pockets on the way out the door. And of course, they were pretty popular with the birthday girl too.
We had the BEST time celebrating this wild little one year old, and I’ll confess – I shed some serious tears as I laid her down for her post-party nap. I don’t know where this past year has gone, but I am so beyond thankful for every dirty diaper and spit-up filled moment. It’s been chaotic and messy and exhausting, but most of all it’s been fun.
Happy birthday my sweet Zoey! You are so very loved!
